JDRF Walk and Other Shelby Business

Hello Everyone!

Me & my Shelby's Wish brick
outside AT&T Park
Shelby & Co. Headquarters is bustling with new information on the walks and t-shirts/ hoodies for Shelby & Co. team members. If you haven't already registered for our walk at the Oakland Zoo on October 14, do it today! Here's the link. We want as many people on our team to try to show up at our walks. My mom will be doing all of the warm-ups for all of the Bay Area walks except for the Monterey walk, so if you register for one walk and can't make it, come to another. We will surely be there.

In other news, I turned in an application to be a JDRF Youth Ambassador. The Youth Ambassadors represent the JDRF and spread awareness about Type 1 Diabetes. We get to go to the members of Congress in Washington, D.C. (if we send in an application, and want to do it), to educate members of Congress on how important and critical it is to have federal funding for Type 1 Diabetes research. We also volunteer at JDRF events and mentor newly diagnosed Type 1 kids. We also are presented with opportunities to do some public speaking.  I got an e-mail from the lady who runs this program, and she said that she got my application and along with that sent me a calendar of events that ambassadors are either able to volunteer at or appear at. I am so excited! This is a great opportunity for me to spread my story to other people and other Type 1 kids.

Anyway, I am writing a memoir in my advanced english class about when I got diagnosed with diabetes. I got some feedback from my teacher who said that it was a really good story and that it was beautifully written. When the final draft is done, I will post the link and you guys can read it and tell me what you think. I am really excited to present it to my classmates. Hopefully, it will provide some perspective on my life now, and how this experience has made me into the person I am today.

Other than that, I think that is all of the news I have. I am really excited to see all of you guys at one of the walks. I hope that you guys have been fundraising for our team and that you guys are keeping with Shelby & Co. on Facebook. I hope that you guys are getting excited about the upcoming walks!

  See you all soon,

I'm Back

Hello everybody!

These past few months, or a year I guess it is, have been pretty crazy. School is starting soon and we have been taking lots of trips as a family. We went to Flower Festival in Lompoc, watching my cousins dance and hanging out with family. Having GREAT barbecues!

Then, we went to Arkansas for a family reunion. We flew into Birmingham, Alabama, and stayed there overnight, then drove to Memphis the next day and spent the night there. The next day, before we left Memphis, we went to the National Civil Rights Museum. It was so powerful and altogether breath-taking. They have preserved that hotel perfectly. It's crazy! Then across the street, there was a museum that showed exhibits of how they found Martin Luther King's murderer, and the evidence they had to prove he did it. They also showed the window they believed he shot Martin Luther King from. It was unbelievable.

We drove from Memphis to Subiaco, Arkansas, and stayed at the monastery, where the reunion was held. It was nice to see all of my relatives that I never knew, all in one place (a little overwhelming but good). After five days, we drove back to Memphis and stayed the night.

The next day we went to Graceland, and learned more about Elvis' road to fame, and what he had to do to get there. It was amazing and seeing his house, and how he had different rooms decorated was crazy cool! After picking up some cool souvenirs we said goodbye to Memphis and drove back to Birmingham, where we stayed with my great Uncle Jeff, my great aunt, and cousins.

The next morning we went to go visit my dad's grandparents, who were more than glad to see my brother and I. It was nice to sit and chat with them in the warm sun, before going back to the house to spend the afternoon with my cousins, and cooking Mexican food with my mom and Kristen (one of my cousins) for my great Uncle Jeff.  The next morning, it was time to catch our plane and head back home. Once we got home, we reflected on the great week we had and future plans to do it again.

My aunt and uncle were up here this weekend and we had so much fun catching up with them and one of my Uncle Ernie's legendary barbecues. This weekend was full of laughs and happy memories and for that I am grateful and very happy.

Now, my last week is devoted to being an eighth grade WEB leader and guiding my group of ambling, scared sixth graders around their new school.

On Monday, it's back to school for sixth grade orientation, the afternoon that will define the way these sixth graders look at the loyal, supportive school of ACMS. I am glad to be a motivated advocate for my school and all the staff that works there.

On Wednesday, the fifteenth, it's time to get back to the grind of school and dance practice.

This year's dance schedule is going to be even more crazy than last year. Alex and I are both on dance competitive teams this year (I on contemporary and Alex on Jr. Jazz team), which means more practices and more work. I am really excited to get started on competitions and doing some fun things with my team!

As for school, being a WEB leader is a HUGE responsibility and I am honored to have been chosen, but this means keeping a good grade point average and following rules. This isn't hard, but now I have to be more diligent about what I do and say since little sixth graders are looking up to me as a role model.

Alex and I now have to use laptops for school and they came on Friday the tenth. We were extremely happy and we are so lucky to have parents who believe in us so much, that they were willing to spend a lot of money on our education. And that is all that I could ask for.

In Shelby and Co. news.....

Shelby and Co. headquarters have been trying to wrack our brains about upcoming walk t-shirts and  hoodie combo colors. We want to have enough time to check if the color is available and have time to order them. We would really appreciate your input on colors. It would help us make a great decision. Also, please start thinking about creative ways to fundraise in your workplace or town. We would appreciate any contribution to our team so we can all have fun at the Oakland and San Francisco walks (more details to come). Please help our team and headquarters make easier decisions.

Well, now we are up to speed on the ongoings of my summer and what's to come. Even all of our Shelby and Co. news. Crazy year ahead. Wish me and my family luck on persevering this eventful year ahead of us.

I will make sure to keep you guys posted!

Making the Wish Connection

Hello everybody! Shelby & Co. has some pretty big events coming up!

First, the walk is coming! We encourage everybody on the team to help us fundraise. We have some team members who have really cool fundraising ideas. We also encourage you to check out our Facebook page for info on all things Shelby & Co.!

Now here’s the cool part! My 1st grade teacher knows these incredible people from an organization called The Wish Connection. The Wish Connection is similar to The Make-a-Wish Foundation, except these people grant wishes for kids who have everyday challenges with things like diabetes, not terminal illnesses. They started this in Texas and are bringing it to the Bay Area. I am going to be the first Bay Area wish child!

I am going to go to San Francisco on Friday in a LIMO! Once I am in San Fran, I will get settled in to the Mark Hopkins Hotel (on the top of Nob Hill). Then go to an Italian restaurant named Bucca di Beppo.

On Saturday, I get to eat breakfast in a restaurant in the hotel. After breakfast, I will go to the House of Air, which is an indoor trampoline park at Crissy Field. Then, we go back to the hotel to get freshened up and go to a Giants pre-game party! After the party, we will get into the limo that will drive us to AT&T Park for a field visit! After the game, we will go back to the hotel and rest.

On Sunday, we will eat breakfast at another restaurant in the hotel. After, we will go to the Academy of Sciences, where we will go on the Adventure Tour. After, the limo will bring us back home!

However, this is only phase one! New York is phase two…

New things and the best summer ever! (not to mention walk stuff too)

Hey everybody!

Here are some updates and some other stuff.

This Saturday is the Walk to Cure Diabetes kick-off at the San Francisco Zoo! Be there. It's going to be fun and the coolest kick-off ever!

The walk is coming up! Team Shelby is the strongest team. It would be even stronger if the regular people brought friends, family, and neighbors. This team is the best and I love all of you.

Now that the walk is coming up on Oct. 23 that means it's time to order -shirts and hoodies. Since we are walking across the Golden Gate bridge it's going to be cold!

Don't forget about the Team Shelby Facebook page.

I'm going to Middle School and I'm kind of scared. There will be lots of classes and I'm going to need a big backpack. I guess I can rely on my family when I need them the most during the year. Thank goodness for families.

Okay I love you guys and hope I can see you at  the walk. Mark your calenders!

Blogging................ FINALLY!

Hey guys!
Let me catch you up on what's been happening lately.  First of all, I want to say the walk was a huge success. Thanks everyone for coming and supporting Team Shelby.

My dad has diabetes now. He found out through a study called Trial Net. They test his pancreas through blood tests to figure out if his pancreas is still working. If it's not then he has type 1 diabetes. His pancreas hasn't stopped completely but is slowing down. He got his first I.D. bracelet, but it's a cuff one. It's so cool.

School has been going okay. Still doing fifth grade everything. I hate it when my class gets so noisy! You can hear the noise outside of the classroom. We had lots of substitute teachers in my class. My teacher's daughter has been sick so she's been watching her.

I think my mom has pink eye because she's not really feeling well. I feel bad because somedays all she does is lay in bed.

I can't wait for baseball season to start. GO GIANTS! My fourth grade  teacher likes the A's . BOO!

Anyway , I'm writing a book called "Alejandra Gonzalez's Guide on How to Get Over Homework, Annoying Brothers, and School. Also on How to Have Fun with Friends and Hang Out All Summer Long!"  Here's a quote: "My rule is to hang out with friends forever and never have to worry about a thing. Sometimes I wonder  how hard it would be if we could all share and have peace, love and unity. However, I don't think that will happen because the world is filled with punks and bullys. I guess I have to except that the world is a sinful place. I HATE it!"

It's a good read. That is from the standpoint of Alejandra who is trying to have the best summer ever. My book isn't finished, but when it is I will let you know.

The SF Walk!

Hey readers!
We had the San Francisco walk today. It was cold for part of the day then it got warm. My cousins came to the walk. They are so cute. I don't ever want them to leave. Aaron and Nathan are at my house for a BBQ. We had tri-tip, chicken, and hot dogs with tortillas. Jealous much? After dinner we all had DELICIOUS chocolate fudge cake. All thanks to Ms. Stacey who is home taking care of her sick family. Thanks for the cake.

The walk :)

Dear readers,
This year's walk is going to be at Crissy Field in San Francisco. The JDRF has put together a hike during the walk. If you want to hike, go to one of my parents before the walk so we know who is going to hike. Since we are doing it in San Francisco were it is really cold, we are doing chocolate brown pullover hoodies and t- shirts. (We're only taking orders through Oct. 5!)

Across the street is the Sports Basement and they are doing an Octoberfest and if we raise $100 you get in for FREE! How awesome is that? I think they have beer and food. Remember: if your going to drink more than two beers make sure you have a non-drunk driver driving you home. :)

The walk's around the corner so remember to register today! Also make sure you get a cool chocolate brown pullover and t-shirt combo.

Thank you so much,
Shelby
